Bette,
on bass guitar, joined the Vibes in Spring 2006.
Bette was born and raised in Mississippi. She learned to play the piano as
a child and competed in state contests for five years.
She eventually scooted the piano over for a
basketball
in the seventh grade. Her prowess on the court led to Belhaven
College where she earned a BS degree in Physical Education on a full
basketball scholarship.
During college, Bette began playing bass guitar and joined the band, “South”, a
top 40 band which played fraternities and college engagements in the Jackson area.
In 1981, a teaching career moved
her to Houston where she is currently a Special Education teacher
with the Harris County Department of Education.
She continued playing bass, but strictly as a hobby, until 2002 when she joined the
group “The Anointing”, and performed at churches in the Houston area.
With no formal training on bass, she states: “Getting out there and playing with
good musicians is the greatest teacher one could have”. Apparently,
she's honing her craft well as evidenced by the ever-present and powerful
foundation she and the Vibes' drummer lay down for EL
VIBES.
Bette increasingly sings lead for the band as well as background
harmonies.
A student of life, a teacher, musician, athlete, and a damn good bass
player - Bette resides with her family in the historic Houston
Heights.
