Ken Mathews starting playing the piano when he was
four. His parents, Charles and Kay Mathews are highly accomplished musicians
with music degrees from The University of Texas. Ken's family is full of
accomplished musicians going back several generations. With Dad being a
Minister of Music and Mom being a piano/voice teacher, Ken was immersed in
music from an early age.
By age nine, Ken was competing in citywide Houston concerto competitions,
guild, and other recital-type settings, normally placing in the top 3 in Houston.
He studied under well known teachers including Amanda Vick Lethco and Bill Chaissan.
He also began playing and singing at church with his parents but, at age fourteen,
Ken gave up music temporarily to pursue athletics and girls.
In 1992, Ken graduated from the University of Houston with a BS in Finance, and
began working as an accountant/financial analyst for Hertz Equipment Rental
Corporation. Ken has been working for Hertz for over 15 years as a
Controller for their Southwest Region.
In his 20's, Ken began making the transition from Beethoven to Billy Joel.
Because of his diverse musical background, Ken can play virtually any style
ranging from country to jazz, to classic rock. Aside from classical
music,
Ken's musical influences include Keith Emmerson, Lyle Mays, Billy
Joel, Elton John, and Billy Powell.
Ken has worked with various bands in Houston including Diverzion and The Usual
Suspects. He has also been playing keyboards for Faithbridge Church in
Spring, TX for over 5 years.
